pH is less direct. Acid or pH increaser demand depends on current pH, target pH, total alkalinity, product strength, and water buffering. Algaecides, clarifiers, phosphate removers, enzymes, stain treatments, and metal products may also be product specific.

Assume a 10,000 gallon salt pool is 500 ppm below its salt target, free chlorine needs a 2 ppm increase, and cyanuric acid needs a 10 ppm increase.

A 10% liquid chlorine dose is not the same as a 12.5% dose. Products sold as pool shock may contain cal hypo, dichlor, or another oxidizer, so the product name alone is not enough.

Scale the dose from actual water volume. For large corrections, add most of the calculated amount first, circulate for the period stated on the label, retest, and then make the final adjustment if necessary.
